A recent family movie night at the household of 14-year-old Sarah Mason ended abruptly when the audio description began to vividly relay the details of an unexpected and lengthy sex scene.
“It went on and on about the positions, and how much pleasure was on their faces, and so much ‘thrusting,’” said Sarah’s mother, Beverly Mason. “It was excruciating. I shut it off and told everyone to go to bed.”
Beverly explained that Sarah is gradually losing her vision and had just started using audio description.
“We had no idea what was coming,” said Beverly. “Usually when there’s a scene like that, we look away. But what are you supposed to do when there’s all that stuff for people who aren’t looking in the first place? You can’t avoid it no matter what you do,” she said with a shudder.
“Do they really need to say what color someone’s nipples are?” Beverly added quietly, staring into the distance.
“I just… I just don’t want to talk about it,” said Sarah’s father, William Mason, breathing heavily through his nose and looking tormented. When asked further questions about the incident, he refused to respond and started vigorously cleaning a grill that appeared to be already clean.
“I’m never leaving this room or talking to my family ever again!” shouted Sarah’s older sister through her bedroom door. According to her family, she hadn’t come downstairs since the movie two days earlier. The Squeaky Wheel removed her name from the story, upon her request.
Sarah’s younger brother, William Mason Jr., was not allowed to see the PG-13 movie but snuck out of bed to watch from a hiding place behind the couch.
“The man who tells my sister what is happening in the movie, he said a lot of words I don’t know,” said William Jr. “What is ‘gyrating?’”
But one family member was not fazed by the incident:
“I knew exactly what was going to happen,” said Sarah. “I picked that movie and recorded their reactions. It has like 80,000 views on TikTok.”
