Average-Sized Wife Brings Back Scouting Report of Deli Counter

In any inter-spatial relationship (where one partner is of average height and one is not) it is the average height partner’s responsibility to scout out areas for the shorter partner. Marriage is a team sport after all.

A consistent scouting report is vital. One report can’t rate the sidewalk as “kind of bumpy” and another say “fine”, when both are barely navigable. When it comes to shopping, items above the shorter partner’s head, such as jewelry, clothing, or knickknacks, can usually be handed down for inspection. Food is a different matter.

We caught up with Jamie and Rob as Jamie was giving her report of the options at the deli counter.

“Ham is looking about a B+. Good pink color but a lot of marbling, which I know you don’t like. The pasta salad was showing it’s age, so I’d rate a C-, but the potato wedges, definitely an A+ today. They came to play, practically crackling with hot grease.”

“What about the liverwurst?” Rob asked.

Jamie cleared her throat and stared at his scouting sheet. “No liverwurst.”

“What? There’s always liverwurst.”

“No, ah.. Nope.” She waved the sheet in the air. “All the food that made it into the case today is listed here and no liverwurst.”

“So you’re saying liverwurst missed the team bus?”

“Yes. Looks that way. But hey, the roast beef really stepped up its game and I’d give it a B+ today. Also, the corn showed a lot less clumping along the walls, so maybe a C+, B-.”

“Liverwurst.”

“Sorry hon. Maybe it missed a team meeting and was benched.”

“Liverwurst, Jamie.”

“Possibly a lower body injury? I thought I saw it get squished between the Gouda and the turkey.”

“Fine.” Rob said, “Potato wedges, corn, half-pound of roast beef.” Then he looked her in the eye. “And a quarter-pound of liverwurst. Don’t make me call the deli manager – again.”

Jamie sighed and made the notes on his shopping list. “Yes, dear.”
