Family Member Thankful to Not Be You Specifically

A classic part of Thanksgiving, other than the glorification of indigenous genocide, is when a family member says something extremely weird. It has come to our attention that this year at Thanksgiving you were completely spacing out while your family went around and said what they’re thankful for, so we just want to make sure you know what you missed.

I bet you were expecting the standard “thankful for my health” kind of thing, which is why you didn’t even listen, but it was actually different this time! One of your family members let everyone know that they’re very thankful to not be you specifically. Everyone else just nodded and acted like that was a normal thing to say.

They went on to say, “It’s not even that I don’t want to be disabled in general, I just am glad I’m not you. I’m happy I have my health, but that’s only part of it. Your life just seems really unpleasant, even in ways unrelated to your disability.” Wow.

At one point, they also somehow managed to downplay your struggles while continuing to talk about how bad your life is. Pretty impressive, if you ask me.

If this news upsets you, that’s fine, because for the low price of jeopardizing your relationship with your entire family, you can make sure this never happens again. All you have to do is casually bring it up next time you see them, which will lead to a major fight, even if you’re nice about it.

Anyway, sound off in the comments with your opinions on cranberry sauce and/or systemic ableism.
