I Really Wanted to Be There but My Symptoms Only Flare Up on Days I Make Plans with You

I’m sure it sounds like I only get sick when have plans with you, but I swear it is just bad luck! It’d be great to catch up soon.

Hi! Sorry this is last minute, but I’m having a celiac episode. I guess the gluten-free burger I had wasn’t actually that gluten-free. I really wanted to be at your party tonight, but I’m going to have to stay home.

This really stinks. I know I missed this same party last year because of a celiac episode combined with a fibromyalgia flare-up. At least it’s only one of the two this time! Hopefully next year we can get down to zero!

And shoot! I just remembered your daughter’s First Communion party! I’d been going super hard at work. I think it triggered a week of long COVID. I really needed to spend all my free time in bed; I didn’t have the energy for anything.

Oh, and I never got around to telling you why I didn’t make it for coffee the other week. Have you ever heard of cyberchondria? It’s the term for that thing where you search for medical symptoms on Google and get caught in this super compulsive, anxious phase of searching for more information. Anyway, I was feeling weird and some of the things I was feeling kind of lined up with late-stage liver disease. I was like, Oh my god, am I dying? I spent two hours freaking out and reading different subreddits until I was like, I need to put the phone away. I totally ghosted you, and that’s my bad.

Lastly, regarding our upcoming class reunion, I think I’m going to pass. With all of this stuff I have, I don’t want to expose myself to crowds, pathogens and overstimulation. It’s just not wise for me to do that.

Maybe I can drop by next time I’m in the neighborhood! Except I just saw that you got a new labrador, and they aren’t hypoallergenic. Thing about that is … oh, never mind. Maybe you can just do a really really good job of cleaning and it won’t be an issue.

Look forward to catching up!
