Education is one of the ways in which people with disabilities are most marginalized in society, but there has certainly been progress. In recent history, there has been a momentous effort to educate people with many kinds of exceptionalities in so-called special education programs, which unfortunately are funded with increasingly limited education budgets. For the sake of universal design and streamlining, it may be time to abolish special education as a concept.
But not, like, in a eugenics way or anything.
I mean, why should there be any special attention paid to disabled students in particular? Do they really need it? Not to say that individual needs shouldn’t be accounted for — trust me, I know they should — I just think that maybe kids with so-called special needs aren’t that special after all.
Wait, no, not like that.
I just think all kids should benefit from the accommodations that are afforded to a select few kids. Shouldn’t everyone be treated like they have special needs? Right? Damn, this isn’t coming out right.
When we get right down to it, we probably shouldn’t consider disability when it comes to education at all.
No, I mean — gah.
No special consideration should be offered whatsoever. Everyone should just get whatever they need to thrive! Treating everyone equally is good, right?
Yeah! I mean, really, when you think about it, we should do everything we can to abolish disability as a concept.
