Following a surgery that left Julie Stein bedridden for four weeks, she opted to stay there.
“After my foot surgery, I was told to stay in bed for a month and keep my weight off of it. During that month, I discovered that I am fantastic in bed and should just stay here!” she said as our interview began. Our investigations revealed that her bed was very comfortable and she was a fantastic cuddler.
We noted that Stein had everything she needed within arm’s reach: antacids, fan, snacks, flashlight, phone charger, water bottle … The wall beside her bed had shelves that held her speakers, some trinkets and various medication bottles. Beneath those were hooks for her headphones and kitchen tongs — she demonstrated using them to grab items slightly beyond her reach. It truly was like a disabled Star Command, and she was chronically ill Buzz Lightyear.
Stein had been pushing through her chronic fatigue for 29 years and had never considered slowing down until her surgery forced her to. Once she had to slow down and rest, she noticed immediate improvements: She experienced less back pain and had more focus, it was easier to socialize with others and she felt less irritable. This revelation made her alter her daily activities so they could be done in bed. Now a great day for her is spending 80% of the day in bed — but she’s not suffering.
“Yeah, actually I’m just so damn good in bed. Not to mention, I’m good at fu-”
