It’s almost summer, which for many means an increase in flare-ups, fainting and heat-exacerbated symptoms of chronic illness. However, one chronically ill fan of the period drama “Bridgerton” has decided to make the most of the season by leaning into what she calls “regency core suffering.”
“Everyone’s preparing for the release of ‘Bridgerton’ season 3,” explained 22-year-old Olive Davies in a viral TikTok that has sparked online debate. “And sure, some people might choose to focus on the aesthetics or the elaborate balls, but nothing screams early 1800s like passing out in the middle of your living room. I guess I’m just an old soul.”
Is falling beautifully ill really making a comeback? Well, many experts have indicated that Davies could be onto something here. Fainting was in fact seen as desirable in the Georgian and Victorian eras, and fashion is known to be cyclical.
“Consider a bedridden Jane Bennett or the many literary ingenues known to gracefully pass out onto the nearest fainting couch. There’s something so romantic about summer suffering,” says Dr. Amanda Reid, who is both a physician and a Jane Austen fan. “Of course, as a medical professional, I cannot in good faith recommend anyone exacerbate their symptoms with the hope of manifesting true love. But as an avid smut reader? I totally get it.”
If you’re looking to both literally and metaphorically lean into the aesthetic of the season, now’s the time to swap out your cooling towels for embroidered handkerchiefs, forgo the fans and sip hot tea in the 100-degree sun. It’s looking like it’ll be a swoon-worthy hot girl summer, indeed.
