I'm finally feeling clearheaded after years of torment from a brain tumor and the sounds of The Tokens!
I went to the doctor to see what could be done about my severe migraines that had an odd, musical aura. During these episodes, all I could do was hold my head in my hands and sing the 1961 hit “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” I wished that, like the lion, I too could sleep. It was futile; there wasn't anything I could doo-wop.
After consulting with Dr. Jay, I decided to undergo a minimally invasive craniotomy for a small benign tumor. As he began to remove the lesion, he was startled by the sound of the rhythmic song. It continued to echo through the operating room — definitely not the jungle — until it was fully detached from my brain.
When I woke up from the anesthesia, I expected to hear about the peace in the village and jungle, but instead I was pleasantly surprised by the peace in my own head. Sure, my migraine was noticeably absent, but there wasn't any South African-inspired jazz either! I can't thank Dr. Jay enough for the clean slate that this surgery has given me!
While the operation was a success, the tumor and song were so deeply embedded in my brain that the doctors informed me I must get routine brain scans to ensure they don't return. After all, another tumor could just be a whim away from … a whim away … umm … aweem away aweem away …
Shit.
That ending was brilliant
